Films like Hereditary and Us, have sparked the idea for this term [elevated horror], but these articles are from the standpoint of, my scary movie is more artistic than your scary move. It’s the hipster mentality of judging someone’s music taste when we all know you like to jam to T-Swift in the shower.
Hard disagree here.
I’ve been a horror fan since I was 7 years old (so, 25+ years), but for a lot of that time the genre has been churning out movies that on the whole just weren’t as good as the ones being released today.
For every treasured classic horror movie, there were ten that were passably watchable at best and absolute garbage at worst.
Horror is going through a renaissance, not because the recent movies are artistic but because they’re good.
