What is it about the term “toxic masculinity” that I dislike so much? It implies that masculinity is toxic.
It really doesn’t.
“Toxic” is an adjective, a modifier.
The word “cheeseburger” does not imply that all burgers have cheese. It refers to that subset of burgers which DO have cheese.
The phrase “pineapple pizza” does not imply that all pizzas have pineapple. It refers to that subset of pizzas which DO have pineapple.
Likewise, the phrase “toxic masculinity” does not imply that all masculine behaviors are toxic. It only refers to that subset of masculine behaviors which ARE toxic.
