“The bulk of today’s African Americans who are poor are not poor because their ancestors were slaves but because of systemic discrimination since they have been free from slavery.”

Those two things are systemically tangled up in one another, though. You can’t untangle them.

It’s like trying to talk about how modern Native Americans are marginalized without addressing the issue of how we stole their land and committed genocide against them. These are inherently linked issues.
